Physical education and school sport plays an important part in the development of all children, promoting co-operation, healthy lifestyle, character building and self-esteem, as well as providing an opportunity for children to develop their skills.
At Auckland College we access some of the finest facilities across the city in order to give our pupils the best opportunity to fulfil their potential, regardless of their ability. The aim throughout the range of activities is for pupils to acquire and develop a range of new skills before they then attempt to apply them to different challenges, enabling pupils to develop their problem solving skills by making their own decisions. Active participation and competitiveness is promoted throughout the age range, as is tolerance and sportsmanship so our pupils appreciate the benefits of physical activity and sport, both physically and socially.
Key stage 3
At year 7, 8 and 9 pupils will continue to experience a broad PE curriculum. During lessons pupils are expected to make progress with various skills applying them to different sporting situations as well as developing an understanding of the rules for each sport. A unit specific to health related exercises is also introduced so pupils can appreciate the benefits of physical activity and identify their strengths and areas for improvement which can contribute to their health.
Key Stage 4
During core PE lessons, pupils will have the opportunity to participate in their activity of choice. They will have greater responsibility, organising and arranging their activity of choice in order to participate most effectively, allowing them to become familiar of how they can use their recreation time once they leave school and continue a healthy active lifestyle. Pupils who opt to study the subject at GCSE will gain 3 additional periods of PE each week to work towards the OCR Cambridge Technical in Sport Level 2. This time will consist of 2 practical lessons where pupils study one individual and one team sport as well as performing at their maximum through a range of fitness tests. The other lesson is designated to the theory of PE and Sport, consisting of 3 units: Anatomy & Physiology, Fitness & Training and Sports Injuries & Illnesses.
Auckland College actively seeks opportunities for our pupils to compete in various activities against other schools and we have had some successes, particularly in the secondary school. Due to the small numbers in each class, combining some age groups is necessary for the majority of sports. Recently we have had success in volleyball and kinball with victories against much larger schools, although football is the most popular amongst the pupils across the age range.
Throughout various units there are inter-class competitions and at the end of the year all pupils compete at the Auckland College Sports Day which is an enjoyable day for the whole school, including parents.
