Prep School How We Learn

Pupils moving through our Pre-Prep and into Reception are prepared with the necessary skills for early reading, writing and mathematics and are therefore at an advanced stage for their age. We continuously build on this strong foundation, adapting our teaching to suit the individual needs of our children.  Pupils are encouraged to strive for high outcomes and are supported to do so through strong links with school and home.

We have specialist teachers for Spanish, Art and Physical Education for pupils in Prep School, which enables our pupils to experience the expertise and enthusiasm of teachers who are passionate about their subject. We transport our pupils on our school minibus to the best facilities in the city for their PE lessons and enjoy a whole-school sports day in the summer term each year. Our pupils start learning Spanish from the age of 3 and by Prep School age they are able to cover a variety of topics, and enjoy activities such as visiting and buying from our Spanish market!

From Year 5, pupils have access to our on-site science laboratory to enjoy the practical side of science and prepare for the demands of science at secondary school.

Our classrooms are interactive and our dedicated suite of Chromebooks is rotated around the classrooms to provide pupils with ICT lessons within their own classrooms.

The expectations for pupils in Reception (age 4-5 years) are to be 12 months ahead in reading, writing and numeracy, in preparation for Key Stage 1.

Our expectations for Key Stage 1 pupils (aged 5 to 7 years) are based on the individual pupil’s needs correspondent to their age and ability. However all pupils will be expected to aim for level 3 in the core subjects of Maths and English by the end of Year 2. Pupils will participate in SATs and will also be internally assessed and monitored throughout.

Our expectations for Key Stage 2 pupils (aged 7 to 11) are also based on the individual pupil’s needs correspondent to their age and ability. However all pupils will be expected to aim for a level 5 in the core subjects of Maths and English to prepare them for competitive places at selective secondary schools at the end of Year 6. Pupils will participate in SATs in Year 6, and will also be internally assessed and monitored throughout.
