Key Stage 1:

Key Stage 1 aims to build on the key skills pupils have developed in Early Years with a strong focus on developing Numeracy and Literacy skills. Pupils are expected to reach a level above the National Average for the core subjects and our small class sizes and teacher ratio's facilitate this process.

Pupils can expect a wide variety of activities as they make the transition from play to more formalised work where they continue to develop their language skills and to master the basics of numeracy.

Pupils will also be given the chance to take ICT, Art, Physical Eduaction and Spanish lessons with expert teachers outside of their normal classroom allowing them to express themselves with the rest of the school community and take advantage of the facilities that are available to all pupils in the school. The Key Stage aims to stretch each pupils ability in all subjects in preparation for the transition to Key Stage 2.

Key Stage 2:

Key Stage 2 sees the development of a more formal education once against based on the core skills of Numeracy, Literacy and Science and a non-core curriculum focused on Geography, History, Information Technology, Art, PSHE and Spanish.

Pupils largely follow the National Curriculum, but with their own individual learning styles we provide a flexible curriculum that meets their needs and learning styles.
In the morning the curriculum focuses on the numeracy and literacy hours with non core subjects mainly in the afternoon. Pupils get the opportunity to complete SAT tests at the end of Year 5 or 6 depending on ability levels in order to gain early experience of examination technique and time the best way to revise. Small group booster sessions are in place after school to ensure pupils reach their utmost potential.

Physical Education, ICT, Art and Spanish are taught by subject specialists outside of the normal classroom ensuring that all pupils feel central to Auckland College.

Key Stage 3 and 4

At the Secondary Stage pupils follow the National Curriculum but are expected to work at least one level above the average for their year group. There is a sharp focus on progressing the core skills of English, Mathematics and Science for which 5 lessons are provided a week for each subject. This remains consistent throughout Years 7 to 11. ICT is also a strength of the curriculum with pupils as young as Year 7 embarking and completing the GCSE course.

At Key Stage 3 pupils will study Geography and History for one lesson per week, PSHE, Art, Spanish, Physical Education and Music. Geography, History, Art, Spanish and Physical Education are available options for GCSE with Business Studies also available.

Pupils will take modular GCSE examinations in Mathematics and Science during this year and complete all English coursework giving them the opportunity in Years 10 and 11 to really excel at the subjects. The school firmly believes that pupils should work at a rate suitable to them.

Pupils are assessed weekly and fed back to on specific targets for learning over the coming term. Results are published on the school database for individual parents to track their own pupils progress allowing for a quick response to any issues of concern or not letting achievement go unnoticed.
