Spanish is a subject that is now required for acceptance onto numerous further education courses. Courses that include a language component will often require you to spend time in the foreign country, which is invaluable experience for you both personally and professionally as employers look favorably upon it. It is highly regarded by employers due to the fact that we live in an increasingly global word and many businesses rely on the linguistic skills of its employees to attract and retain business. In large, successful companies the ability to speak a second language will often give you the edge over competitors.
We always seek to build children’s confidence in Spanish and try to present the subject in variable and interesting ways, suitably differentiated for individual pupil’s needs. This includes losing our fears to speak in public and even in a foreign language with interactive activities. The use of ICT in Spanish is essential.
Key stage 3
Lots of our pupils in Key Stage 3 have learned Spanish whilst in Prep, but for a few, it is something new. The topics chosen in Key Stage 3 are appealing for younger pupils, such as: holidays; free time activities or personal descriptions of their idols. During these 3 years we establish a solid basis of vocabulary and also of grammatical structures in order to prepare our pupils for their GCSEs. As listening is such a key aspect when learning a language, we focus on this a great deal, ensuring to explore a variety of Spanish accents.
Key stage 4
The GCSE option for Spanish gives pupils the opportunity to expand their linguistic techniques acquired at Key Stage 3. It also enhances pupils understanding of their own language. It is a challenging, yet thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile course. It will fully prepare pupils who want to continue a language beyond GCSE, as well as those who simply want to use the language for practical communication either on holiday or professionally. Learning another language also improves thinking skills, as well as enhancing their moral awareness by exploring other cultures.
Over the two years pupils will develop their understanding of the spoken and written forms of Spanish, concentrating on increasingly accurate, complex and varied language. They will develop positive attitudes to learning a foreign language and the culture of the countries in which it is spoken.
The use of the course book is essential, but material is also taken from other sources such as newspapers, radio, reference books, websites, etc.
Pupils will study three broad themes:
- Identity and culture
- Wales and the World – areas of interest
- Current and future study and employment
These themes are then subdivided into smaller topics to be studied in greater depth.
